About us
Pandayan Bookshop, founded in 1993, is a 34-store chain spread across Central Luzon, northern Metro Manila, and parts of Rizal and Cavite. Two new stores – in Silang Cavite City and Laguna – are scheduled to open before the school opening. The usual size of our stores is around 200 square meters.
Our affairs at Pandayan are run by an 11-person Executive Committee which meets every other Friday and a 40-person Katipunan ng mga Panday which meets monthly. Team meetings are conducted monthly for each store. Our core values and our paradigms of management and leadership are crystallized in the Kultura ng Tagumpay – our performance bible.
Our mission in Pandayan is “maging kabalikat ng kabataan tungo sa kabutihan at karunungan.” Our vision is “maging pambansang tatak.” Our main strategy is power retailing. Alongside our mission and vision is our “Pangarap para sa Panday” which welds the company to the goal of enabling each Panday to own a house and lot, send his or her children to good schools, eat nutritious food, wear decent clothes, and enjoy leisure activities.
In addition to our Kultura ng Tagumpay and management meetings, other integrative mechanisms help sustain our cohesion and direction. Among them are our balanced scorecard, called Timbangan ng Tagumpay which is monitored monthly; our E-MAP (Excellence in Management Assurance Plan) composed of monthly performance assessments; the quarterly Pangkat Plan for each group of stores; and Samalikha, our monthly newsletter.
So far, for this year alone, four of us have built houses while a fifth has purchased a duplex unit. The realization of our dreams is made possible by a profitable customer-driven enterprise; a performance-based incentive compensation scheme consisting of monthly bonuses and annual profit sharing; and Sarilikha, our employee credit cooperative. We expect 10 daliri, our multi-purpose cooperative, to add another income stream to fuel our aspirations for a life of quality.
Talent is in abundant supply in Pandayan. An active pipeline of talent enables Pandayan to promote from within so that our managerial employees, except for two, rose from the ranks. This policy of promotion from within adds vitality and power to our Kultura ng Tagumpay. Meanwhile, decentralization, empowerment, and collaboration unleash individual creativity. The ideas which make up Pandayan spring from different members.
Human reciprocity is one of the greatest fruits of Pandayan. Management strives to help improve the lives of employees. In return, employees care for the stores and serve customers in ways that border on the heroic. This exercise of the ability to give freely of one’s resources and of oneself is a hallmark of human dignity. Its outcome is an expanding economic pie that benefits all stakeholders, including Pandayan’s chosen charities – Bantay Bata, Nazareth Home for Street Children, and De Mazenod Vocational School of Notre Dame.
